The Research Unit is responsible for department process measurements, fidelity audits, organizational development, operations research, strategic planning, performance measures, educational research, and Human Subject Research Review Committee (HSRRC) coordination. Research is also responsible for technical, statistical and research support to the agency, the Secretary of Public Safety, other Executive Branch agencies, the General Assembly, interagency committees and workgroups, and other external stakeholders. The Research Unit's primary functions include, but are not limited to, data extraction and analysis; outcome studies, including recidivism; offender population trends and forecasts; legislation and policy analysis; special population studies and data requests; surveys and census reports. A Senior Research Analyst develops and maintains databases for use in analysis from VirginiaCORIS and other applicable resources; provides complex analysis and reports related to trends, special population studies, legislative analysis, surveys, and support agency initiatives; and responds to ad hocs and special analysis requests. While this position does have telework options, staff may need to attend in-person meetings and make site visits across the Commonwealth.
Knowledge of empirical/statistical techniques and methodology, data analysis and data
management. Demonstrated proficiency in statistical analysis software (such as SPSS) and databases management software (preferably Access, Excel, Power Point, and Adobe Acrobat). Experience with complex relational databases. Considerable skill in data collection, data assembly and applied research. Ability to accurately interpret analytical results and to communicate findings by presenting oral and written reports to various audiences.
Degree with major studies in Statistics, Social Science, Criminal Justice, Public Policy or
Business Administration or related field or equivalent training and/or experience. Prefer graduate degree in Statistics, Social Science, Criminal Justice, Public Policy, or Business Administration or related field or equivalent training and/or experience. Prefer working knowledge of Virginia criminal justice system and databases.
